and knitters everywhere gasp in horror...
The other night this is what we found against our outside window. Ladies and Gentlemen that thump you just heard was Stephanie the Yarn Harlot fainting to the floor. Thank goodness this guy was on the outside of the window.

That is my daughter's hand up against the glass. We promptly christened it Mothra while I tried to envision how much wool a sucker this size could consume. I'm actually not even sure that's what this particular breed of moth eats but nevertheless I'm not about to invite him inside.
Perhaps he's heard of my extensive yarn stash and is trying to figure out a way in.... now I'm scared.
For those who are mystified here's a closeup. He was definitely the largest moth I've ever seen, perhaps we can blame global warming. A future of giant moths does not bode well for wool lovers.

Cool! <--That's the entomologist in me talking, but the knitter in me is fervently checking the safety of my wool yarn now.

ok so the Orkin guy just came to spray for ants and I showed him this picture and he says he's never seen one of that species get so big - he says usually the Luna moth gets that large but not this variety

Nicole, I just popped in after a long vacation to see if you had any news, and was so sorry to read about your loss.
I am glad you're finding reason to smile (and to shriek in horror - holy crap that's a big moth!) Keep baking with Lexie. Cookies and three year olds are good for the soul.

Thank you Ilana. Kind words are always nice.
For those who've been dying to know the good people at http://www.whatsthatbug.com have informed me it is a female polyphemus moth. Their larvae feed on trees from what I see online so I think my wool is safe.
